# Clear the typing indicator

> Asks the line's device to clear the typing indicator of a chat before it expires.

* **Credential:** an API key. A trial key returns `401 unauthorized`. See [Typing indicators](/guides/conversations#typing-indicators).
* **Line-scoped keys:** the list of a [line-scoped key](/authentication#line-scoped-keys) is not applied: such a key acts on any chat of the account.
* **`Idempotency-Key`:** not honored. A repeat asks the device to clear the indicator again.
* **Events:** none.
* **What reaches the contact:** the line's device clears the indicator when it shows one. An indicator also clears on its own 15 seconds after the last start.

## Errors

| Status | `error.code` | When |
| - | - | - |
| 404 | `not_found` | The chat is unknown, or its line is not yours. |
| 422 | `sms_typing_not_supported` | The chat's line is not an iMessage line. |
| 422 | `unsupported_handle` | The chat's contact is not a phone number in E.164. |

The errors that every operation shares are in [Errors](/errors-and-rate-limits#errors).

  title: iSnap API
  version: 2.45.0
  description: >-
The iSnap API sends and receives iMessage, RCS and SMS on real phone lines,
manages those lines, and reports events through webhooks. Every message is
sent to a real recipient, with an `isnap_live_` key and with an
    `isnap_test_` key alike. Retry a `429` after `Retry-After` seconds. Retry a
`500` or a `503` up to 2 times, with exponential backoff. Do not retry any
other `4xx`: fix the request. Retry a write only on an operation that honors
`Idempotency-Key`, with the key of the first attempt. Responses carry
personal data: handles, names and message text.

      summary: Clear the typing indicator
      description: >-
Asks the line's device to clear the typing indicator shown to the chat's
contact. Returns `200` with `stopped_at`. The call succeeds even when
nothing reaches the contact: when the line has no paired device, and on
every shared line, the request is dropped. iSnap sends no event about a
typing indicator you clear. The chat must be on an iMessage line and the
handle of its contact must be a phone number in E.164: otherwise the API
        returns `422 sms_typing_not_supported` or `422 unsupported_handle`.
Accepts an API key. A line-scoped key can call it for any chat of the
lines you own: its `line_ids` are not checked.
